Block 5 – Rescue
TIMELINE:
Complete by: August 31st, 2023
Hands-On training will be held the end of August
BLOCK PURPOSE:
The focus of this block is rescue or victim removal, arguably, this is why we exist as a trade, and it is of the utmost importance that we can rapidly and effectively remove and resuscitate all fireground victims that we find. A recent FSRI study (pg66) and the Fireground Civilian Rescue Research Project (pg12) have validated what we have traditionally believed: the faster we can remove a victim and the lower in the environment we keep that victim, the better. These rescue techniques are “tried and true” from across the nation as well as within our department as some of the best methods to both keep the victim low and rapidly remove them. There is no “one size fits all” method, so practice these and any other techniques you may know in a variety of conditions and buildings to gain confidence as a crew removing the small child all the way to a large “American” adult victim and have a “Plan B.”
